I like to include greens in my juice. I usually go with kale and spinach, both of which are super nutritious and high in vitamins and minerals. Other vegetables that work well include celery, carrots, and beets.

As for the fruits, I mix whatever is in season, but for this one, I suggest you use apples. Other fruits could work, including bananas, oranges, peaches, mangoes, or strawberries. 

If you like sour drinks like me, then you need to add lime juice as well. However, you can use lemon juice, or a touch of apple cider vinegar. Some people add orange juice, or even lemonade, but I do not like the added sugars, so I use whole fruits instead.

You also need to add ginger. I go with fresh ginger that I grate. Still, minced ginger works too, and in a pinch, you can also add powdered ginger.

Why use ginger in your smoothie?

For starters, it is a spice full of health properties. Ginger is a great digestive aid, promoting your gut health and keeping your bowel moving appropriately. On the other hand, ginger is also a powerful antioxidant, helping your body fight off oxidative damage and free radicals that can lead to disease and cancer. Finally, ginger is a fantastic anti-inflammatory, helping your body lower general inflammation, which causes chronic pain and illnesses too.

Ingredients

  • 1 handful fresh spinach

  • 1 handful fresh kale

  • 1 apple, cored, quartered

  • 1 lemon, juiced, zested

  • 1 inch knob ginger, minced

  • 1/2 cup cold water

  • 1/2 cup ice

  • Optional
  • about 1/4 cup fresh mint leaves (add more for garnish)

Directions

  • Put all ingredients in a blender.
  • Pulse for 1-2 minutes on high setting until smooth.
  • Enjoy!

Notes

  • Apples in smoothies have a tendency to cause a spike in blood sugar. You can replace it with banana or mango if this is a concern for you.
