What is sea moss?

Also known as Irish moss, or carrageen moss, this is a species of red algae that grows in rocky parts of the Atlantic Ocean in Europe and North America. This algae is not new, and it has been considered food for many years, but it is now gaining popularity across the world.

Sea moss is a good source of iodine, a mineral that tends to be deficient in many parts of the world and that is essential for the correct functioning of the thyroid hormones. Be careful, though, because eating too much sea moss may increase your iodine levels too much.

This food can also increase your immunity, helping your body fight infection and disease more easily. And while none of this has been proven, some believe that sea moss can prevent neurodegenerative damage, including Alzheimer’s disease.

Aside from sea moss, though, you will be adding bananas to your smoothie. This is a great fruit, full of vitamins and minerals, and enough carbohydrate to fuel your day.

You can also add dates, hemp seeds, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla, cardamom, peppercorn, and a touch of sea salt. These ingredients are optional and you may substitute them as you want. Include things like figs, chia seeds, vanilla extract, or almond extract.

All that you have left to do is blend everything and adding water last. Blend until the desired texture, and enjoy this smoothie cold.

Prep time




  • 2 frozen bananas

  • 2-3 dates, pitted

  • 1/4 cup organic hemp seeds

  • 3 tbsp sea moss gel

  • 3/4 tsp cinnamon

  • 1/4 tsp nutmeg

  • 1 tsp vanilla

  • 2 pinches cardamom

  • 3-5 black peppercorns

  • 6-8 ice cubes

  • 1.5 cups filtered water

  • a pinch of salt

  • Optional
  • 1/2 tsp jaggery


  • Put all ingredients to the blender but leave water for last.
  • Add in as much water as there are contents in the blender.
  • Blend until smooth.
  • Pour into a drinking glass.
  • Enjoy!
